Students are taught what is and is not a conflict, how to negotiate integrative agreements, and how to mediate schoolmates' conflicts. The peer mediation program is established and the role of mediator is rotated so each student serves as mediator an equal amount of time. Participants will learn how to infuse the conflict training into different subject areas. In Academic Controversy: Intellectual Conflict in the Classroom, participants learn the procedures for using academic controversies to increase the quantity and quality of academic learning, develop social responsibility in students, and increase students' critical thinking, higher-level reasoning, and decision-making skills. The procedure requires students (a) research and conceptualize positions, (b) make persuasive presentations, (c) engage in critical analyses of opposing positions, (d) refute the opposing position and rebut attacks on own position, (e) view the issue from both perspectives, and (f) create a synthesis of the various positions. Leadership Training: Foundations of Cooperative LearningThis institute is for educators who have (a) taken the foundational and at least one more institute in cooperative learning (advanced cooperative learning, creative conflict, leading the cooperative school), (b) used cooperative learning for a year or more in their classroom, school, or district, (c) read extensively in the field of cooperation, and (d) been chosen by their school district to provide leadership and training in cooperative learning. Participants will learn how to (a) conduct the foundational training in cooperative learning and (b) supervise and support the implementation efforts of the teachers they are training. Participants will receive a leadership manual scripting each session and containing the related transparencies and materials needed to conduct the foundational training. Interested educators must complete an application and be admitted by Roger Johnson.
